Larger properties tend to have system boilers installed, which use a separate cylinder for storing hot water.
The boiler generates the hot water which is then stored in the cylinder. The water is usually heated by gas jets, but more and more are using electricity generated by green technologies like solar and wind.

When hot water is needed, a combination boiler stops pumping water to the central heating system and diverts power to heating the water.
They are cheaper to install since they do not require water tanks and the pipes and controls that come with them.
