Want to save money on your energy bill, that’s a silly question, of course, you do! Make sure you aren’t making any of these mistakes.

Turning the heating up high will warm the room quicker

It is a common misconception that turning up the thermostat for a short period of time will heat a room quicker. This is wrong, the room will still heat up at the same speed so you won’t get any benefits and will only increase your bills.

Electric Heaters are more energy efficient than central heating

Electric heaters are often thought of as a more economical choice compared to central heating systems. Many of us opt for electric heaters to keep warm in the cold months, assuming they offer a cheaper alternative to turning on the heating. However, in reality, they may prove to be less cost-effective. Using a heater to warm up a certain spot will cost more than simply turning on a radiator.

Painting radiators black will make them more energy-efficient

Put the paint away unless you want to redecorate your room with a black radiator. Painting your radiator black won’t actually have any heating benefits. Black paint does absorb heat quicker but this will not increase how much heat is transferred out by your radiator. However, you can make radiators more efficient by placing reflective panels behind them which reflects heat back into the room. This also stops heating from leaking through the wall.

The majority of heat is lost through windows

Don’t rush and get double glazing thinking it will lower your energy bills. Most heat is actually lost through uninsulated walls. In fact, this can equate to up to 35% of heat loss. If you want to increase your energy efficiency you should consider properly insulating your home.
