Breaking barriers and keeping the business running

Behind every successful plumbing, heating and electrical job is a team – and a strong back office making it all work.
At the heart of every successful business is someone ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. Caroline, Director at Solitaire, plays a vital role in keeping the company organised, accountable and moving forward. Here she shares her perspective on leadership, the importance of strong operational support, and what it means to be a woman building a career in the industry.

“When people think of plumbing and heating, they don’t always picture a woman behind the business. Even today it still surprises some people – and, unfortunately, I do sometimes find myself defending my position more than a male colleague might.
As one of the Directors at Solitaire I might not be out on the tools every day, but I’m very much in the engine room of the company. My role focuses on keeping the business organised and running smoothly – managing the administration, coordinating schedules, handling the accounts and ensuring the many moving parts of the company stay aligned.

At Solitaire  accountability is incredibly important. Having someone overseeing systems, responding to calls and emails, and ensuring every job is properly followed up allows our engineers to focus on what they do best – delivering excellent work for our customers.

Like any strong team, success comes from the combined efforts of everyone involved. Every member of the Solitaire team plays a vital role. Behind each completed job is planning, organisation and support working quietly in the background to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Important to be a role model

Alongside my role in the business, I’m also a mother of three daughters and have been involved in Girlguiding for more than sixteen years. Being part of both worlds has made me especially proud to represent women in an industry where we’re still underrepresented. It’s important to show that there are many ways to build a career in construction and mechanical services.

The industry is changing. More women are stepping into leadership, operations, finance, compliance and trade roles – and businesses are stronger because of it. Diverse perspectives build more resilient companies and healthier working cultures.

My own career journey has taken a few unexpected turns. From studying sculpture – learning hands-on skills like welding, bronze casting and stone carving – to working in education, and eventually moving into the world of business operations. Each step along the way brought new lessons and experiences that now contribute to how we run and grow the company today.

Don’t change who you are

To any woman considering entering this sector – whether on the tools, supporting operations, or running a business – the message is simple:

You don’t need to change who you are to belong here. Bring your skills, your standards and your work ethic, and be open to learning as you go.

Days like International Women’s Day aren’t just about celebrating achievements. They’re also about recognising progress and continuing to move forward.

At Solitaire, I’m proud of the team we’ve built and the work we do. Strength in business comes in many forms – including the people behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly.

And here’s to the women who are building, organising, leading, fixing and growing businesses every day.
