At Solitiare, ongoing training is key to maintaining the high standards our customers expect. Over the past few weeks, our engineers have taken part in focused in-house oil masterclass workshops, designed to strengthen knowledge of oil boilers and storage systems.
‘Toolbox Talks’ weekly learning
Our weekly ‘Toolbox Talks’ bring the whole team together to discuss health and safety, technical challenges and real jobs from recent residential and commercial projects. Engineers can raise fault-finding questions, share experiences and learn from one another in an open, supportive setting.
Alongside this, we run weekly masterclasses covering gas and oil fault finding, wiring faults and plumbing issues – ensuring continuous development across the team.
What the oil training covered
Week One:
Understanding the burner firing sequence and how to identify the difference between a system fault and a burner fault. For example, a burner lockout usually indicates a burner issue rather than a wider system problem.
Week Two:
A practical session where engineers dismantled and reassembled oil burners, identified components, tested fire valves and checked oil samples for water contamination.
Week Three:
Oil tank installation, correct siting and common issues such as splitting or poorly supported tanks. The team also fired up a rebuilt burner to observe the ignition sequence in real time.
What we check during an Oil Boiler Service
Every Oil Boiler Service includes:
Checking the overall condition of the boiler and oil tank
Inspecting internal components and nozzle sizing
Testing oil pump pressure
Carrying out flue gas analysis
Completing the relevant certification
Common faults and warning signs
Common issues include:
Running out of oil (Watchman oil gauge preventable)
Seized burner motors
Failing capacitors
Signs of inefficient burning include strong fumes, black smoke from the flue, or increased oil usage. With proper annual servicing and preventative maintenance, an oil boiler can last 20–25 years
