The Boiler Upgrade Scheme Explained

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme Explained

Have you heard about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)? This is a government initiative to encourage and help homeowners switch from traditional non-renewable heating systems like gas and oil to renewable and sustainable heating systems such as heat pumps. That means the government could give you money towards the installation! To make things even better Solitaire are adding to the grant which means you get even more! Let’s delve deeper into what the scheme entails and how you can benefit.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) aims to decarbonise heating in homes across England and Wales. Through offering financial grants to homeowners, the government aims to increase the adoption of heat pumps and biomass boilers.

Previously the amount given to homeowners was £5,000 for air source and £6,000 for ground source heat pumps, however from the 21st September 2023 these amounts were increased to £7,500 for both. It doesn’t end there though!

Solitaire’s Offer

We are going a step further. Solitaire are adding £2,500 of our own bringing the amount up to £10,000. Yes, you read that right you can receive a grant of £10,000 towards the installation of an air or ground source heat pump. What a deal! We want to make renewable heat more accessible than ever.

How do Air & Ground Source Heat Pumps Work?

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) utilise the warmth from the surrounding air to heat your home and provide hot water. Even in extremely cold climates, they maintain efficiency, extracting heat effectively even when air temperatures plummet to as low as -15°C. Choosing an Air Source Heat Pump enables you to generate renewable heat, potentially leading to significant reductions in your energy costs.

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) use buried pipes in your garden to extract heat from the ground. This heat can be used to warm radiators and underfloor heating systems or provide hot water throughout your home.

Transitioning to a Ground Source Heat Pump allows you to generate renewable heat independently, potentially leading to reduced energy expenses.

Who can apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

You could qualify for the scheme if you:

  • Live in England or Wales
  • Own your property (This can be a home or small non-domestic property)
  • You are changing from a fossil fuel heating system (oil, gas or electric)
  • You have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) for your property and no pending loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations.
